Sarah and were stuck on the name Kenny when we were looking for a dog back in 2009. When we took this cute little girl home, the name was so set in stone that we changed the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ to make it a little more feminine – Kenni. To confused passers by and new friends, we’d always introduce her as “Kenni with an ‘i.’
Over the last 15 months, she’d slowly been losing vision in her right eye. Two weeks ago, an ulcer developed in that eye that we tried to treat. Her pain and discomfort wound up being too much and landed us in the Tufts emergency room.
We were presented with two surgical options. One was to patch the damage the ulcer had caused in an attempt to preserve the eye and whatever vision was left. The other option was to remove the eye, bypassing the difficult recovery of the first option and guaranteeing Kenni almost immediate relief and a much shorter recovery.
The odds were very low that she’d recover any vision in that eye and high that we’d be back in a couple weeks to have the eye removed anyway. Given those odds and our unwillingness to put Kenni through back-to-back surgeries, we opted for the safer of the two options.
The silver lining of the situation was that her vision in that eye had deteriorated so gradually that it was likely she wouldn’t even notice the change.
Only a few days after surgery, she’s mostly – and thankfully – back to her sassy self.
While I was on the phone with Sarah in the exam room as we talked through the options, my mind obviously searched for dumb jokes.

In a matter of months, my mom raised $15,000 for the family of Yarmouth's Sgt. Gannon with these Thin Blue Line collars and leashes.
She's still making them for a good cause. Now a portion of the proceeds will benefit Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog. You can order yours at https://psk9collars.com/.
